Description 

 

The Woodward PCM128-HD is a dual-fuel locomotive control module specifically designed for Cummins India dual-fuel locomotives. It serves as a key control unit for managing the mixed control of fuel and gas, regulating operating parameters, and monitoring system status of dual-fuel locomotives, ensuring their stable and efficient operation.

 

This module must be used in conjunction with the Woodward ToolKit service tool, which is available in two versions: ToolKit Professional and the standard ToolKit. ToolKit Professional is a licensed software tool that allows application engineers to modify or create new screens for service configuration, configure control software to meet specific site or application requirements, monitor and tune system variables selected in the GAP application program, trend variables, and upload and download all tunable and configuration variables from the control. The standard ToolKit, on the other hand, lacks the screen modification capability but offers the same functionality as ToolKit Professional otherwise.

 

Communication between the PCM128-HD and a PC can be established via an RS-485 communication interface, which requires the use of an RS-485-to-RS-232 converter (such as B&B Electronics Model 485SD9TB, Woodward P/N 1784-1038) or an RS-485-to-USB converter (such as B&B Electronics Model USOTL4, Woodward P/N 1784-1037). When connecting, the SCL+ line of the PCM128-HD (corresponding to pin J1 B22) is connected to the TD (B) pin of the converter, and the SCL– line (corresponding to pin J1 B23) is connected to the TD (A) pin of the converter.

 

With the ToolKit software, three core functions can be achieved for the PCM128-HD. Firstly, it enables the downloading of GAP application code. The PCM128-HD may be shipped from the factory with a default GAP program; if a new application needs to be loaded, the control should be connected to the RS-485 port using a suitable converter, and the "Load Application" option from the File menu should be selected. Importantly, the engine must be shut down before downloading to prevent engine damage or serious personal injury. Secondly, it supports the uploading, downloading, and editing of system settings files (in .wset format). To save the current settings file from the control, the ToolKit must be connected to the PCM128-HD, and the Save Settings Wizard will appear. For viewing or editing an existing settings file offline, the "Edit Setting File" option in the Settings menu can be used. Thirdly, it allows real-time monitoring of locomotive operating parameters (e.g., engine speed, fuel pressure, load voltage) to assist in troubleshooting and system debugging.

 

In terms of safety, the PCM128-HD requires compliance with electrostatic protection precautions. These include discharging body static before handling the control (with the control power turned off, contact a grounded surface and maintain contact while handling), avoiding plastic, vinyl, and Styrofoam (except antistatic versions) around printed circuit boards, and not touching components or conductors on printed circuit boards with hands or conductive devices. Additionally, the locomotive's engine, turbine, or other prime mover equipped with the PCM128-HD should have an independent overspeed shutdown device, and an overtemperature or overpressure shutdown device may also be necessary for safety.
